MUMBAI: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders on Wednesday taunted Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray after his resignation, reminding him of his "karma" and the legacy of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray. Thackeray resigned as chief minister on Thursday after the Supreme Court refused to allow the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government led by him to stay on the governor's directive to prove a majority in the assembly.

They realized that they had lost the majority on the same day when Shiv Sena minister Eknath Shinde revolted to betray Hindutva. His tenure has proved that opportunistic alliances do not last.
Balasaheb could control governments even when he was not in power,

BJP secretary and head of the party's IT department Amit Malviya tweeted, "Balasaheb Thackeray was a man who could control governments even when he was not in power. The state legislature needs the support of 144 MLAs
After Thackeray's resignation, the BJP can now form a government in the state with the support of Shiv Sena rebels. According to BJP sources, Leader of the Opposition Devendra Fadnavis could take over as Chief Minister. The BJP has a total of 106 MLAs in the current assembly. With the support of Shiv Sena rebels as well as some independent MLAs, the BJP can claim to form a government. The 288-member state assembly needs the support of 144 MLAs to form a government.
