The National Pharmaceuticals Pricing Authority has fixed the retail prices of about 45 formulation drugs, which are used in the treatment of hypertension, common cold, infections, acidity and eye diseases.

Apart from this, price limits have also been set for some medicines useful in the treatment of high cholesterol and triglyceride levels. For example, the retail price of the combination drugs of Paracetamol, Phenylephine Hydrochloride, Screen and Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride tablets is Rs. 3.73 has been determined. This combination is used in the treatment of allergies and common cold. Another combination Amoxicillin and Potassium Lavulanut Oral Suspension (used as an antibiotic) has a retail price of Rs. 168.43 has been fixed. Similarly, formulation drugs including Citalini and metformin hydrochloride (sustained release) tablets used in the treatment of diabetes cost Rs. Cannot be sold at a price higher than 18.67. In a notification issued by NPPA on August 24, it has been stated that the prices of drugs have been fixed under the Drug Price Control Order (2013). It also clarified that manufacturers can add GST on products only if they have actually paid for it. The report comes amid reports that the sale and use of fixed dose drug combinations (FDCs), or pharma products that contain more than one active ingredient for a specific effect, is increasing at an alarming rate in the Indian market.
