Per capita Ahmedabadis ranked sixth in the country in paying taxes
Mumbaikars are No. 1 in the country: Rajkot ranks 11th in the country in per capita tax pay and Surat ranks 10th.
New Delhi: An Ahmedabadi pays Rs 15 for the development of a city which ranks sixth in the country in terms of per capita payment in municipal tax. This amount is Rs 15 more than what Chennai residents pay and Rs 2 less than Bangalore residents.
On June 19, the officials of the Union Ministry of Urban Development have shown the above details of the 3 largest municipal corporations of the country.
The highest per capita municipal tax is paid by Mumbaikars at Rs 205. The average per capita tax collection of municipal corporations is Rs 61.
"Simply put, big cities like Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Coimbatore and Bangalore have higher tax rates due to milk density and their rising prices," said a senior official of the Gujarat Urban Development Department.
He further said that in addition the property tax is decided on the basis of carpet area based representation which is a fair representation of the market price. It may also be re-evaluated from time to time. In addition, self-assessment schemes also play an important role in tax collection statistics.
Ahmedabad collects Rs 1,215 crore annually in vehicle, professional and property taxes. The per capita tax is Rs 50 for Surat residents, Rs 2 for Rajkot residents and Rs 211 for Vadodara residents.
Sharma added, "User charges, impact fees and compensation from the state government are less than 2% of the revenue of the municipal corporation."
The seven largest cities in India are Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad, according to a report by the Union Ministry of Urban Development. Pune and Surat are very close as fast growing metropolitan cities in the western states of Maharashtra and Gujarat respectively.
